2024 AVIATION
INDUSTRY FORUM

“CREATING BETTER PILOTS”

part of the
2024 UPRT CONFERENCE

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA

1 - 2 JULY 2024

What is happening at the 2024 Aviation Industry Forum?

We are inviting the following groups to sit in the same room to discuss the declining standards of new Commercial Pilots;

  • CASR Part 141/142 providers;

  • Commercial Pilot – First Job providers; and

  • Airlines

With the end goal of reducing the “loss of life and hull”, we are seeking the opinion of industry so we may start to understand not only the perceived problems, but develop recommended solutions from those on the frontline, on how to improve the delivery of the current CASR Part 61 training syllabus and raise the standards of both recreational and professional pilots.

The team at the 2024 UPRT Conference have identified four of the major building blocks of our industry, that we believe contribute directly to achieving the standards that every pilot should meet BEFORE being issued a Pilot Certificate or License.

Trent Robinson

Trent Robinson embarked on his aviation journey in 1995 at the Royal Aero Club of WA, transitioning from student to charter pilot and flight instructor. Over the years, he ascended to roles such as Grade 1 flight examiner, Chief Flying Instructor, and Chief Pilot for including operators like Attitude Aerobatics and Advanced Cockpit Flight Training. His dedication and passion for aerobatics, formation, and instrument flying, coupled with a knack for cultivating flight schools from inception, has garnered him a steadfast following, emphasizing practical training beyond conventional syllabi.

Relocating to the Top End in December 2018, Trent contributed to aeromedical retrieval services with CareFlight, piloting the King Air. Presently, he spearheads his own Part 141 flight school, Trent Robinson Aviation, based in Darwin. Additionally, he hosts the Flight Training Australia podcast, recently receiving the CASA Wings Flight Instructor of the Year Award for 2023.

Trent’s fervor for elevating flight training standards across Australia is evident through his podcast and mentorship of aspiring aviators and future instructors. His unwavering commitment to safety underscores his efforts to enhance opportunities for both private enthusiasts and commercial graduates.

2024 Aviation Industry Forum Goals

Gather industry observations on the declining state of both recreational and professional pilot standards exiting initial training.

Develop a "Gap Analysis" between the currently observed skills and knowledge of a Commercial Pilot Graduate (from a Part 141/142) against the expectations of the "First Job Provider" (Part 135/138), and discuss proposed solutions, aided by a public survey.

Provide "First Job providers" (Part 135/138), the skill level requirements and expectations of Airlines (Part 121).

Discuss effective pathways for a Commercial Pilot Graduate to "Bridge the Grand Canyon" by developing the required experience (not only flight hours but operational skills and knowledge) to be a safe and efficient part of aviation.

Obtain opinion from industry on the importance of "primacy" within initial training, in particular with respect to LOC-I

Discuss the importance of "On-Aircraft UPRT" for Part 135/138 and 121 operators via recurrent training.
