What is happening at the Creating Better Pilots Forum?
Our objective is clear:
To cultivate a generation of pilots who not only meet but exceed the demands and expectations of our dynamic industry.
To achieve this, we recognize the vital role that your insights, experiences, and expertise can play in shaping the future of aviation training in our country.
We are specifically seeking participation from operators across various segments, including airlines, first job providers and Part 135 companies, and flight training organisations. Your unique perspectives and first-hand knowledge are invaluable assets as we endeavour to identify and overcome the obstacles that hinder the development of top-tier aviators.
At the heart of our initiative is the recognition that while pilot training predominantly occurs at the 141/142 level, comprehensive improvement requires input from all levels of the industry. We are committed to fostering an environment where feedback flows freely, from the bottom up and the top down, ensuring that our efforts are truly reflective of the diverse needs and challenges faced by all stakeholders.
Moreover, we are acutely aware of the importance of aligning pilot training with the evolving demands of the job market. It is not enough to produce pilots who simply tick off syllabus requirements; rather, we must equip them with the skills and competencies needed to excel in their careers from day one including UPRT skillsets.
Your participation will be instrumental in guiding flight schools towards this goal, mitigating the risk of producing pilots ill-prepared for the realities of our industry.
In the spirit of collaboration and progress, we invite you to join us in this important forum. Your participation in discussions, sharing of insights, and contributions to the development of actionable strategies will be pivotal in shaping the future of pilot training in Australia.

CREATE BETTER PILOTS
We are inviting the following groups to sit in the same room to discuss the declining standards of new Commercial Pilots;
CASR Part 141/142 providers;
Commercial Pilot – First Job providers; and
Airlines
With the end goal of reducing the “loss of life and hull”, we are seeking the opinion of industry so we may start to understand not only the perceived problems, but develop recommended solutions from those on the frontline, on how to improve the delivery of the current CASR Part 61 training syllabus and raise the standards of both recreational and professional pilots.
The team at the 2024 UPRT Conference have identified four of the major building blocks of our industry, that we believe contribute directly to achieving the standards that every pilot should meet BEFORE being issued a Pilot Certificate or License.
The forum will delve into….
The System,
The Syllabus,
The Delivery and
The Assessment

Forum Guest Speakers
Trent Robinson
Trent Robinson embarked on his aviation journey in 1995 at the Royal Aero Club of WA, transitioning from student to charter pilot and flight instructor. Over the years, he ascended to roles such as Grade 1 flight examiner, Chief Flying Instructor, and Chief Pilot for including operators like Attitude Aerobatics and Advanced Cockpit Flight Training. His dedication and passion for aerobatics, formation, and instrument flying, coupled with a knack for cultivating flight schools from inception, has garnered him a steadfast following, emphasizing practical training beyond conventional syllabi.
Relocating to the Top End in December 2018, Trent contributed to aeromedical retrieval services with CareFlight, piloting the King Air. Presently, he spearheads his own Part 141 flight school, Trent Robinson Aviation, based in Darwin. Additionally, he hosts the Flight Training Australia podcast, recently receiving the CASA Wings Flight Instructor of the Year Award for 2023.
Trent’s fervor for elevating flight training standards across Australia is evident through his podcast and mentorship of aspiring aviators and future instructors. His unwavering commitment to safety underscores his efforts to enhance opportunities for both private enthusiasts and commercial graduates.
Mark Greenfield
Mark began his career as a pilot in the RAF and went on to become an Unlimited level Air Display Pilot. He was the founder of the Ultimate High Flight Academy in 2001 and then ran the world famous Empire Test Pilot School at Boscombe Down for QinetiQ before focussing full time on UPRT.
He represented the UK on the EASA Rule Making group on LOC-I and helped to write the AUPRT requirements that became mandatory for commercial pilots in Europe from December 2019.
Mark is one of the most experienced Instructors of UPRT FIs and students in Europe and consults for a wide variety of airlines, regulatory bodies, ATOs and business jet operators. He is a strong advocate for UPRT in General Aviation and is passionate about helping pilots to avoid, recognise and recover from Flight Upsets.
Angela Garvey
Angela is a commercial pilot with over 30 years of experience in the aviation industry. Her aviation journey began as a co-director of a highly successful skydiving business outside Brisbane. Since then, her extensive experience includes roles within large government and corporate organisations such as Airservices Australia, Boeing Jeppesen, Aeromedical Helicopters, and Airport Manager. More recently, she has completed training as a registered counsellor and, over 12 months ago, launched her own specialist counselling, support, and in-house employee assistance service for the general aviation community.
The inspiration for "Navigating Aviation" stemmed from her experience following the fatal crash of one of her skydiving planes in 2006 and the challenges of navigating the aviation industry since then with little to no support. In the years following that tragic accident, Angela realised that while larger airlines and aviation organisations provide employee assistance and peer support programs, specialist aviation counselling and aviation-tailored in-house employee assistance programs were not available to the general aviation community.
Angela's unique perspective and deep understanding of the aviation industry drive her determination to ensure that others in the community can access the specialist support they need. Her extensive experience and personal journey make her a credible counsellor, advocate, and role model in the aviation industry. On a personal level, Angela is passionate about encouraging conversations regarding the lack of support in the aviation industry, specifically in general aviation, which will form the preface of her talk "The Unseen Hole in the Swiss Cheese" at the Aviation Industry Open Forum "Creating Better Pilots" on Monday, 1st July 2024.
Maddy Johnson
The Australian Flight Training Industry Association was formed in August 2021 by an alliance of Flight Training industry professionals. AFTIA has been formed to work with CASA and Government to deliver better regulations, better flight training outcomes, and a more unified voice for Australian Flight Training operators - from small GA schools to Part 142 schools to Airline Check & Training.
Forum Goals
Gather industry observations on the declining state of both recreational and professional pilot standards exiting initial training.
Develop a "Gap Analysis" between the currently observed skills and knowledge of a Commercial Pilot Graduate (from a Part 141/142) against the expectations of the "First Job Provider" (Part 135/138), and discuss proposed solutions, aided by a public survey.
Provide "First Job providers" (Part 135/138), the skill level requirements and expectations of Airlines (Part 121).
Discuss effective pathways for a Commercial Pilot Graduate to "Bridge the Grand Canyon" by developing the required experience (not only flight hours but operational skills and knowledge) to be a safe and efficient part of aviation.
Obtain opinion from industry on the importance of "primacy" within initial training, in particular with respect to LOC-I
Discuss the importance of "On-Aircraft UPRT" for Part 135/138 and 121 operators via recurrent training.
